As always, South Florida - namely Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale - are popular Spring Break destinations for visitors from all over the country, even the world.
While the weather and fun-loving atmosphere of Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale are appealing, the locals do not agree. In fact, over the past few years, residents of Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale have tried hard to discourage people from visiting during Spring Break (despite the positive impact for local businesses).
That being said, police officers will be out in force this Spring Break - arresting people for crimes such as disorderly intoxication, disorderly conduct, battery, DUI, as well as drug possession charges and serious felonies.
In other words - you will have a situation that involves large numbers of people, significant amounts of alcohol and a large police presence.
The situation is ripe for arrests to occur, and if you or your loved one is not from South Florida, this may be quite distressing.
What do you do? Do you have to return to South Florida for Court? If you get a DUI in Miami Beach but you are not a Florida resident, will your driver's license in your home state be suspended?
These are all valid questions.
If you are arrested in South Florida during Spring Break 2024, or your friend or family member is arrested, contact my office to discuss the best way to resolve the matter.
If you do retain a criminal defense attorney, it may be possible - though not in all cases - for your case to be resolved without you having to be physically present in the State of Florida.
