In a follow-up to an earlier post, the Miami-Dade Police Department has arrested a nineteen year-old man in connection with the fatal North Miami nail salon robbery that resulted in the murder of the salon owner’s ten year-old son. The salon owner was shot as well but he has survived.

Tips from the community led police to the suspect’s sister’s house. The suspect allegedly put up a fight and was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

According to the Miami-Dade Department of Corrections, the accused is charged with one count of first-degree murder with a firearm, one count of armed robbery with a firearm, eight counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, and one count of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.

The accused has also been booked under a separate case number which leads me to believe that the police may suspect that he was involved in another robbery. That charge is armed robbery with a firearm and one count of grand theft of a firearm.

The third case under which he is booked is for one count of battery on a law enforcement officer.

The State Attorney’s Office has not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty in this matter. Given the age of the victim and the fact that the murder occurred during the commission of a violent felony.

The accused is being held without bond as first-degree murder, armed robbery with a firearm, and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm are all punishable by life in prison, thus they are non-bondable offenses.

The accused has a prior criminal record that includes armed robbery charges.

Eric Matheny is a Miami criminal lawyer and a Broward criminal lawyer representing clients charged with serious felony offenses in both counties.
