BSO: Police Bust 6 Grow Houses
232 Arrested In Crime Crackdown
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- More than 200 people were arrested in a multi-agency crackdown that led police to find six marijuana grow houses, thousands of pills and hundreds of grams of cocaine, police said.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service joined with several local police agencies for the operation, which took place on Aug. 19 and 20.
Investigators were looking to catch criminals committing crimes such as prostitution, drug deals and the illegal sale of prescription drugs as well as fugitives and online sexual predators.
BSO said 232 people were arrested, and authorities seized 25 firearms, including two AK-47s; 9,076 prescription pills, such as Oxycodone and Xanax; 174 pounds of marijuana from six grow houses; 300 grams of cocaine; five vehicles; and more than $171,000.
In this failing economy, marijuana grow house busts and other drug stings mean big money for the city, county, and state in forfeitures. A forfeiture is when the government can go after your property if it is used in the commission of a crime. That may mean cash, cars, or even your home.
Trafficking in marijuana, prescriptions, or other drugs can carry mandatory minimum prison time.
