The Hialeah Police Department has initiated an effort to catch people carrying fake insurance cards.
During a routine traffic stop, police will ask for a driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. Officers said some drivers present insurance cards that are not legitimate.
Faking auto insurance is considered a type of fraud, and is a third-degree felony that can lead to maximum exposure of 5 years in state prison.
It is better to have no insurance or no proof of insurance than to have a fake insurance card. It is only a traffic infraction to have no insurance or no proof of insurance. In fact, if you are able to show a valid insurance card by the time the ticket goes to court, it is usually dismissed.
