Five people have been arrested and charged in connection with Sunday's robbery and fatal shooting of a Brink's armored truck courier at the Calder Casino and Race Course, federal authorities announced Monday.
The five arrested were residents of both Broward and Miami-Dade.
Their arrests were announced by the FBI. The exact charges filed against them and each individual's alleged role in the robbery were not released Monday.
Around 5 p.m. on Sunday, one of the suspects allegedly got out of a truck and sat down on a bench outside the Miami Gardens casino and racetrack. The suspect allegedly waited until the armored car guard, carrying some money, left Calder. The suspect allegedly rushed the guard, and then shots were fired.
The gunman reportedly grabbed the money bag and jumped back into the truck, which investigators believe was stolen from a nearby Walmart parking lot. Investigators found the truck at El Palacio Sports Hotel, at the corner of 27th Avenue and County Line Road.
The five arrested will likely be charged with armed robbery with a firearm, felony murder, and
conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
The men will likely be charged federally, although state charges may be filed as well.
